ATEC Advances Draft Updates to FAA Mechanic ACS

ACS,

ATEC’s Airman Certification Standards Working Group has advanced draft recommended updates to the FAA Mechanic Airman Certification Standards (ACS), with council working documents now available for stakeholder review.

The Mechanic ACS defines what an entry-level mechanic must know, consider, and be able to do. First implemented in 2022 alongside modernization of part 147, the ACS serves as the unified framework connecting mechanic training, testing, and certification. Under part 147, A&P schools are required to align curriculum to the ACS.

As part of the FAA-industry working group responsible for recommending updates, ATEC has undertaken a structured review of the standard to ensure it reflects current maintenance practice and workforce needs. Since early 2025, subject-matter experts representing schools, industry, and the designee community have met weekly to conduct a line-by-line review of the ACS. Recommendations are informed by workforce research, federal findings, academic study, and industry input and focus on improving clarity, measurability, and organization by:

  • Using more consistent, performance-based language
  • Strengthening integration of risk management elements
  • Improving organization and cross-referencing of knowledge and skill tasks
  • Supporting consistent nationwide interpretation
