The ATEC Journal

Latest Issue: Spring 2026

This issue of the Journal features two articles focused on strengthening aviation maintenance education. The first examines the gap between the current Aviation Mechanic Airman Certification Standards (ACS) and the knowledge and skills expected of today's entry-level technicians. Drawing on industry and educator feedback, the article outlines a data-informed approach to modernizing the ACS so that it better reflects current technologies and workforce needs. The second article explores the development of an affordable maintenance trainer built from retired simulation equipment and other readily available components. The author demonstrates how realistic, functional training devices can be created at a fraction of the cost of traditional equipment, expanding hands-on learning opportunities for students. Together, these articles highlight the importance of aligning training standards with industry needs while finding innovative, cost-effective ways to enhance aviation maintenance training.
